This happened to an author of my acquaintance. She got an email from a “fan” and the gist of it was this: Dear Ms. Author. I really like your books. I think they are well-written and I …

I’ve returned books. Not because I thought that good work should be given away for free, but because the books I returned were crap The (so-called) author accused me of theft because I returned them. I read them, she argued, so I should pay for them.

That might be true for any other author, with a few exceptions. Like Nick Pacione and the two that wrote Twilight and 50 shades. Don’t even get me STARTED on those.

In my case, I felt no quilt whatsoever returning those… I guess they were supposed to be books. They were horrible. The self-supposed author/publisher can’t write her way out of a wet paper back and has a history of ripping off other authors. So, no. Back they go.

If I buy anything that doesn’t live up to what it’s supposed to be, I return it, whether it’s a shirt that’s the wrong size on the tag, an appliance I get home and discover that it doesn’t work, or a book that’s supposed to be literature but turns out to be an assault upon the world of written words.

i feel bad for any author that gets ripped off, whether it’s from a shady publisher or abusive “fan.” It’s too bad some people just don’t know how to behave.
